How Early Should I Open My Swimming Pool?

Kids playing after the family opened their swimming pool

You got a glimpse of spring, and now you can’t wait. Everyone is excited for the pool to open. The kids are going crazy, asking for the first big pool party and having their friends over for a day of splashing and pool games. But how early can I open my swimming pool? What is too early, and what are the rules?

How Early Should I Open My Swimming Pool?

There are not any hard and fast rules, but there is a general rule we like to follow. We recommend you open your pool once the temperature in Wisconsin hits 70° F. According to weather.com, that looks like middle to late May. But we all know weather patterns can change, so check again close to May. And yes, we will have some cooler weather, but there are a couple of reasons to get your pool ready early, so you are ready to let the fun begin.

Open Early to Defeat the Swamp Monster

It is ok to open your pool and get it ready for that first plunge into the water when the temperature is 70° F. We know you may not swim quite yet, as it is still a bit cool. But your pool likes a bit cooler temperature. If you wait until later, when logic would tell you it is the perfect temperature to swim, you may be unintentionally causing an unhealthy water issue – algae.

If you have had a pool before, you know algae can quickly turn your pool from clear and luxurious water into a swamp monster. Ugh, nobody wants algae in their pool. The heat of the sun warms the water, and warm water left untreated is a breeding ground for algae.

So, get the cover off, get your pool cleaned, add your start-up chemicals, and soon the only thing turning green will be your neighbors with envy!

Oh No, I Waited Too Late to Open My Swimming Pool

It’s not all lost if you wait longer than is ideal to open your swimming pool.

  • Check for algae and treat your pool with the recommended products from A-1 Pools to get your water back to swimmable levels.
  • It will most likely be more expensive to get your pool open if you start later. The additional chemicals needed to get your water chemistry correct will be greater than the expense of running a pool longer if you open it early.
  • Time is a factor. Cleaning will take longer, and whether you do it or you have us open the pool for you, time is money.

Do I Need Repairs Before the Pool is Kid Worthy?
